New Developments in Cosmetic Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a technique that started in France over 50 years ago to deliver vitamins and supplements by injection into the specific area to be treated. In cosmetic medicine it has evolved into methods to treat the appearance of cellulite as well as reduce unwanted areas of fat, such as on the abdomen, sides, thighs, and under the chin. These have become an increasingly attractive option for people who do not want to undergo liposuction surgery.
Recent techniques have involved injecting fat dissolving substances that are natural to the body in order to reduce the appearance of fatty deposits. One such substance is phosphatidyl choline, a “phospholipid”, which is a fatty molecule that can help make other fats mix with water. Phosphatidyl choline injections have been used for over a decade to treat areas of unwanted fat. It appears to cause death of fat cells and liquefy the fat, which the body then eliminates. Candidates for this type of treatment must be healthy, active and not overweight, as this therapy is not a replacement for proper diet and exercise, but rather a “spot treatment” of stubborn fatty areas that resist weight loss efforts. The downside to this treatment until recently has been the major inflammatory reaction and pain caused by the injections and the relatively long period of time required to see results.
In the last few months, a new mesotherapy cocktail has been in use that has lower doses of phosphatidyl choline resulting in far less inflammation and pain. It also includes insulin-like growth factor 1, which reduces body fat by affecting the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The vast majority of patients treated using these new protocols have been able to carry on with their normal activities immediately and have their treatments done only a week apart. A typical course of mesotherapy can now be finished in about 10 weeks rather than 6 months, with little to no discomfort.
