More about Mesotherapy
2006-01-28

Dear Doctor De Pieri;

During a recent trip to Europe I heard about a cellulite reduction treatment called Mesotherapy which is very popular there. Can you tell me anything about it?

Answer: Mesotherapy pioneered in the 1950s by French physician, Dr. Michel Pistor, is a medical specialty that involves injecting microscopic quantities of vitamins, minerals, pharmaceuticals and amino acids just millimeters under the surface of the skin (mesoderm). It can be used to eliminate cellulite, promote weight loss, treat aging or sagging skin and in body sculpting.

Question: What is body sculpting?

Answer: Cosmetic contouring of the abdomen, back, bra-lines, legs and thighs can be achieved with mesotherapy injections. Vitamins and amino acids are injected to tighten sagging skin while additional mesotherapy medications are used to remove areas of fat, thereby restoring a more youthful and athletic appearance of the body without downtime from work. Based on individual requirements, the physician will select a formula that is injected under the skin where it will slowly diffuse into the fat and produce fat breakdown.

Question: Can Mesotherapy be used to remove eye fat pads and double chins?

Answer: Yes, Mesotherapy has proven effective for reducing the fat or puffy areas found under the eyes (the ‘tired look’). It can usually delay, or avoid, the need for future surgical removal of fat pads and the possible complications associated with surgery. Mesotherapy has also proven successful in the reduction of fat, which creates the appearance of a double chin. These procedures will tighten the skin and give these areas a more youthful contour.

Question: How does Mesotherapy differ from Liposuction?

Answer: The major difference is that mesotherapy, unlike liposuction, is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure. It does not require hospitalization, general anesthesia or downtime. The treated fat deposits are flushed from the body and do not reappear in other areas, which often occurs after liposuction. Mesotherapy is best suited for people who are not excessively overweight but like your case, have problem areas that will not respond to diet and exercise. The downside with mesotherapy is mainly that the results are gradual when compared with the immediate results that liposuction offers.

Question: Will the fat that was removed from the treated areas return?

Answer: Collagen, a primary connective tissue as well as fat and adipose tissue are derived from the mesoderm. Mesotherapy treats cellulite by stimulating the mesoderm. This aids cellulite reduction by increasing blood flow and improving lymph drainage. Mesotherapy sessions can aid in reducing the ugly effect of cellulite. This helps your skin regain its natural appearance. If you regain weight after treatment, the fat will most likely return to the treated area. However, a healthy lifestyle incorporating moderate exercise and proper nutrition and diet in addition to mesotherapy has demonstrated good long-term results.
