New revolutionary treatment for Cellulite 2006-06-23
Dear Dr. Proskiw:
I'm a 48 year old lady and I've noticed that despite daily workouts and running on a regular basis, I still have some loose, flabby areas. Do you have any suggestions?
These areas are called cellulite. Fat is stored in fat cells which lie between the skin and muscle underneath. The fat cells are grouped together into large collections which are separated by fibrous strands. These fibrous strands run between the muscle and the skin. As the fat cells expand with weight gain, the gap between muscle and skin expands but unfortunately the fibrous strands cannot stretch. This results in the dimpling characteristic of cellulite.
• Cellulite is not a unique substance and it is no different from fat cells found in any other part of the body.
• Fat cells have fat-storing and fat-releasing receptor sites.
• Different parts of the body have fat cells with more fat storing sites or more fat-releasing sites.
First of all, it would be important to evaluate your weight as it relates to your height. Your body type is also an important factor. Some people have different body types and despite being extremely fit, may not have the body shape that they would like to have. I think it is important that our expectations are realistic. However, there are some new procedures available that do help with dissolving and breaking down fatty areas, provided that they aren't too large.
My friend had liposuction with excellent results, however I do not want to go that route, and I don't think that my case is that severe. I have love handles and a small area on my hips and thighs that I would like firmed up.
Liposuction is an excellent way of getting rid of fat cells. In talented hands the results are excellent. The newest treatment available for fat cell breakdown involves radio frequency. Radio frequency(RF) works much like the microwave, in that radio frequency energy is applied to tissue. The resistance then causes the water molecules to vibrate. The heat is produced then breaks down the divisions between the fat cells and in effect melts some of the fat. RF treatments can create dramatic change without the need for invasive surgery or even topical anesthetics. An added benefit is that this is a no downtime therapy. Both RF energies are delivered to tissue with continuous contact cooling, which provides additional patient comfort and epidermal protection. We have had excellent results using the accent radio frequency device in our office.
Another treatment that is being offered is lipodissolve, which is a type of meso therapy. This involves tiny injections of a substance that dissolves fat. These superficial injections are made with a tiny needle into the fatty area. Over the following few weeks the fat cells are broken down and absorbed.
How important is exercise, diet and weight control during treatments?
I believe that all 3 are very important factors. It is extremely important that patients continue a good exercise program, eat well and drink plenty of water. These are the people that will benefit most from lipodissolve and radio frequency fat treatments.
